A gearbox for the Horch 14-17
The Horch 14-17 was the first car that August Horch, who later founded Audi, had built in Zwickau at the beginning of the 20th century. “14 to 17” stands for the estimated horsepower.
As none of the original vehicles still exist today, the August Horch Museum in Zwickau has decided to revive a piece of this heritage and painstakingly recreate the masterpiece.
Based on a historical photo, a catalog from 1904, several construction sketches and a dismantled original engine, the classic has now been faithfully recreated and brought back to life after twelve years of painstaking restoration work.
As one of many local supporters of the project, CHEMNITZER ZAHNRADFABRIK manufactured all the transmission parts and the drive shaft for the manual gearbox.
Since July 2024, the replica now has a place of honor in the collection of the August Horch Museum in Zwickau. You can also watch the vehicle in action in the ARD media library.
